A regional worker spent the night in the watch-house after he allegedly made terrifying threats to kill a woman when his pay was late. Here’s what happened in the courtroom.
A Mackay man who allegedly threatened to shoot a payroll officer after his wages were late has been granted bail.
Anfernee Eugene Errol Sexton must abide by a number of conditions including being banned from phoning Proactive Accounting Solutions, which handles the payroll for his employer.
The 22-year-old is charged with one count of using a carriage service to make a threat to kill on February 8, 2023 at Glendon.
Mackay Magistrates Court heard Mr Sexton worked for Eton Services Pty Ltd, which is contracted to a mine, and it was alleged he phoned the business that handled the wages and “threatened to shoot” the payroll officer.
Magistrate Bronwyn Hartigan heard the bail application on Thursday.
“He’s threatened to kill their accountant,” she noted.
“If he goes back to work for Eton Services Pty Ltd, Proactive Accounting Solutions is still going to be the payroll person or people.”
The court heard the risk could be mitigated with a condition he be prohibited from phoning the accounting company at any time.
“Or go near their office, which is not the office of (his) employer,” ATSILS defence lawyer Phil Moore said.
The court heard Mr Sexton was not new to the criminal justice system, although Ms Hartigan said she was “not convinced he would actually get jail for that at his age”.
Prosecutor Leonie Taufa’ao said the main concern was Mr Sexton contacting the alleged victim.
Ms Hartigan granted Mr Sexton bail with strict conditions.
“He’s not a risk of failing to appear, he’s a risk of ringing up and further threatening to kill the account lady when he doesn’t get his pay on time,” Ms Hartigan said.
“That’s the issue, so that’s my concern.”
Mr Sexton’s bail conditions include no contact orders against any employee at Proactive Accounting Solutions, and prohibiting him from going within 100m of the Mackay office.
His matters were adjourned to March for mention.
