Payroll Essentials Course
This course is suitable for individuals who have some basic payroll knowledge or for those who want to update their knowledge due to the many changes in legislation. The course covers the essential areas of payroll that you will need to know to process a payroll on a day to day basis and ensure that you up to date with the latest legislation.

At the end of this course, learners will:
- Have an understanding of the Australian Industrial Relations system, including the difference types of employment, minimum wages and how modern awards and agreements are used
- Know how to apply the 12 National Employment Standards
- Have knowledge of, and be able to calculate, leave entitlements such as annual leave, personal/carers leave, compassionate leave, parental leave, community service leave and the basics of long service leave
- Know the public holiday requirements for working or not working on a public holiday
- Understand the PAYG Withholding tax system and how to calculate withholding on regular payments and also lump sum payments such as backpays and bonuses/commissions
- Know how to tax basic termination pays, such as the marginal rate tax calculation on leave payments on termination
- Have an understanding of different pay components such as allowances, employer obligations for deductions from an employees’ pay, and how to correctly process overpayments
- Know the legal requirements of payslips and record keeping obligations
- Have introductory knowledge of superannuation, including the meaning of Ordinary Time Earnings, minimum payment obligations and salary sacrifice contributions
Advanced Payroll
This course is suitable for individuals who have had several years’ experience in the payroll profession and want to ensure their knowledge of complex payroll legislation and calculations is up to date.

At the end of this course, learners will:
- Have up to date knowledge of long service leave rules for the 8 states and territories, including the entitlement to LSL and how to determine the rate of pay for a period of LSL
- Know each of the elements which can make up a termination pay
- Understand how to tax and report redundancies
- Know what an Employment Termination Payment (ETP) is and how to tax and report an ETP, including any tax-free components
- Know how to use the ETP Cap and Whole of Income Cap when taxing ETPs
- Understand employer obligations under the Superannuation Guarantee Administration Act and the penalties for non-compliance
- Have a comprehensive knowledge of superannuation including complexities in Ordinary Time Earnings and the maximum contribution base
- Understand the impact of salary sacrifice arrangements and Reportable Employer Superannuation Contributions (RESC)
- Have knowledge of the basics of Payroll Tax, including what is included as salary and wages, the payroll tax thresholds and rates for each state and territory, and how employing in multiple jurisdictions can impact payroll tax
Long Service Leave Masterclass Course
This course is suitable for individuals who have had several years’ experience in the payroll profession and want to learn about or update their knowledge about all rules and legislation relating to Long Service Leave in the 8 States and Territories.
Delivered in a virtual environment, this course allows for interaction with our experienced trainers, and contains numerous practice activities, example situations and interactive whiteboard demonstrations.

At the end of this course, learners will:
- Understand where the entitlement to long service leave can come from, including long service leave in pre-modern awards, portable long service leave schemes and the 8 different state and territory long service leave Acts
- Have up to date knowledge of the 8 State and Territory Long Service Leave acts, including:
- Understanding the entitlement to long service leave including pro-rata entitlement on termination
- Understand the meaning of 'continuous service', how it is applied
- Be able to calculate the rate of payment for employees taking long service leave and when paid out on termination
- Understand the different State and Territory rules in regards to cashing out long service leave
- Determine the difference treatment of public holidays that fall during a period of long service leave
- Understand the specific record-keeping obligations for each State and Territory in regards to long service leave
- Within what timeframe to make a payment of long service leave on termination
- Understand how overseas service might impact an entitlement to long service leave
Superannuation Masterclass Course
The knowledge obtained in this course will assist payroll professionals in identifying compliance issues in regards to their superannuation obligations and the steps required to rectify any issues found.

- Understanding their obligations under the Superannuation Guarantee (Administration) Act 1992
- Understand their minimum superannuation guarantee obligations, including any exemptions and also superannuation for contractors
- Have knowledge of choice of super fund legislation and how super stapling applies to both new and existing employees
- Understand the meaning of Ordinary Time Earnings (OTE) including some complex issues when determining whether payments are OTE
- Be able to apply the Maximum Superannuation Contribution Base correctly
- Understand what salary sacrifice contributions are and what it means to be an 'effective' salary sacrifice arrangement
- Be able to accurately report their Reportable Employer Superannuation Contributions (RESC)
- In the event of an underpayment issue, know how to calculate the superannuation guarantee shortfall and submit the Superannuation Guarantee Charge Statement to the ATO
- Have knowledge of their Record-keeping obligations specific to superannuation
Terminations Masterclass Course
This course is suitable for payroll professionals who want to learn or update their knowledge about all rules and legislation relating to all types of termination payments. Students will be sent accompanying handbook and practice activities.

- The different types of terminations and how the category of the termination can impact the tax treatment of a final pay
- How to tax annual leave and LSL on termination for the different termination categories, including the marginal tax calculation and tax on LSL for employees with pre August 1978 and pre August 1993 service
- How to determine notice periods and redundancy entitlements under the National Employment Standards and how to calculate the value of these
- What counts as a genuine redundancy payment for tax purposes, including how tax on redundancy payments differ for employees over pension age
- How to classify Employment Termination Payments (ETPs)
- How to determine the tax on an ETP, and understanding when to use the ETP Cap or the Whole of Income Cap
- How to determine any tax-free segment of an ETP paid due to invalidity or with pre 1/7/83 service
- How an employees’ age may affect their termination payments
- What to do on the death of an employee
