Eligibility criteria
There are two pathways available in order for you to be eligible for certification.
Pathway 1
The payroll professional has at least three years payroll practicing experience prior to undertaking the assessment. Experience can include:
Pathway 2 The candidate has at least 12 months of payroll practicing experience prior to undertaking the assessment, and has completed the following two courses of study within the last 12 months’:

Passing the Assessment
The CAPP assessment is an online assessment made up of 140 multiple-choice questions. The multiple-choice assessment comprises both knowledge-based and calculation-based questions. The content of the assessment is updated annually on 1 July. Any changes to legislation or regulations that occur throughout the year will not be incorporated into the assessment until the next update.

During the AssessmentYou will be given 3 hours to complete the assessment. The assessment is timed and only answers provided during the 3 hours will count towards your final mark. The assessment must be completed in one sitting. You cannot navigate back to prior questions once you have moved on to the next question. There will not be an opportunity to review your answers at the end of the assessment. Passing the Assessment Individuals will require a result of 75% to pass the assessment. If the assessment result is less than 75%, the individual may re-sit the assessment at a later date for no additional cost. The individual may contact the Australian Payroll Association for recommendations on additional areas of study or training, based on the results of the first assessment. If the individual fails the assessment on a 2nd or subsequent attempt, additional attempts will be charged at $150.00 per attempt. Obtaining your resultsYour assessment results will be provided to you within one week of sitting the assessment. |
Retaining your CAPP certification - re-certification by assessment
Due to the constantly evolving landscape of payroll, including changes to legislation, your CAPP certification is valid for two years.
In order to maintain your certification you will be required to re-sit the CAPP assessment prior to your certification lapsing. A (10%) discount is applied for re-certification assessments. Australian Payroll Association will notify you by email three months prior to your certification expiring, in order to provide sufficient opportunity to schedule and study for re-certification. |
Your Investment
There are two options available for your certification.
- Option 1 - Assessment only - $650 (members discounts apply)
- Option 2 – Assessment packaged with training (Virtual Payroll Essentials and Advanced Payroll) – price - $2,400 (members discounts apply)
Sharing your Certification with a Credly Badge
Australian Payroll Association uses Credly to offer you a digital version of your credentials. These digital badges can be incorporated into email signatures, digital resumes, and shared on social media platforms such as LinkedIn and Facebook. Each Credly badge is linked to metadata that provides context and verification, ensuring maximum visibility and recognition across the internet.
Badges offer employers and peers tangible evidence of the efforts required to earn your credential and the competencies you have developed. Individuals may also obtain a hard copy certificate on request. |
